Newcastle PL2 v Albion PL2 match report

Albion’s PL2 team notched their second Premier League Cup win of the season by beating Newcastle United 1-0 at Northumberland FA’s Whitley Park.

The Baggies came in to the fixture against the Toon with three Premier League Cup group points to their name after sealing a 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe United in their first PL Cup game, and now sit top of the group with six points.

Albion’s first chance of the afternoon fell to Jamie Soule, who turned a Finn Azaz cross goalwards only for Jake Turner to make a diving save, pushing the ball to safety.

The hosts then went close through Luke Charman, who hit the post inside the box. However, it was the Baggies who would take the lead just before the interval as Chris Willock played a pass to an unmarked Nick Clayton-Phillips, who fired the opening goal from close range.

In the second half, Azaz and Clayton-Phillips both went close for Albion, while Newcastle ensured the game was tight until the death, with their best chance forcing Dan Meredith to clear off the line.

ALBION: House; Meredith, Fitzwater, O’Shea, Harmon; Harper, Solanke (Wilding 58); Clayton-Phillips, Azaz (Brown 70), Willock; Soule.

Substitutes: Emery, Dyce, Martinez.
