John Swift has been speaking about his willingness to help Albion achieve positive results in a variety of different scenarios and positions.
The club’s number 10 has made 20 league appearances so far this term, starting 10 of those and coming on in the other 10.
Swift has been utilised in both deep and advanced positions in midfield, while also drifting out towards the left at times.
John says he’s determined to recapture his best form as quickly as possible and insists he’s happy to take on a wide range of roles in the team in order to hit the levels he knows he’s capable of.
He said: “It’s annoying that I’ve not registered a goal or an assist yet.
“Every season I go into I try and get as many goals and assists as possible. I haven’t managed to do that yet but I’m sure it will come. As attacking players, those contributions are things we’re always looking to try and get.
“Ultimately, you want to win games as much as you want a goal or an assist, but with the more opportunities I get, hopefully, I can start tucking the ball away more or adding those assists. The wins are most important, but hopefully I can start chipping in to help us get those three points more often.
“For me, I want to be in a position where I get on the ball as much as possible. It wasn’t as if we worked on me being in that left-side deeper role during the first few months. I was told that’s where the spaces were and I just fell into that role a little bit. It worked against QPR and we just kept winning, but I just like to control the play, whether that be deeper or higher up the field.
“It’s tough to take when I’m further away from the opposition goal, but if that’s what it takes to get the forward players in front of goal more. then that’s what I’ve got to do.
“All of the attacking players want more goals, chances and assists. It’s what’s expected of us forwards and we all share that responsibility. Jed, Mikey, Grady, everyone wants to get on the scoresheet and, for whatever reason, it hasn’t happened so far. At some point, though, I know we will chip in with our share.
“If you score or get an assist, then automatically your confidence is up. But whether I start the game, come on as a substitute, play half of the match or just two minutes, I’m going to do whatever needs to be done on the day to win the game. If that’s trying to get on the end of crosses, having more shots, then I will.
“If it’s entering the pitch late one to help the lads assert more control to see games out, then I’m happy to do so. I’m not someone who comes on to just get a goal or assist. I’ll do whatever the team needs. If I get a goal it’s a bonus, but I’m coming on to do what needs to be done.”
