Albion suffered their first league defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, as they were beaten 3-2 at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls held a two-goal half-time lead through an OG and Josh Windass’ header - though the Baggies did fight back to level in the second period courtesy of Josh Maja and substitute Alex Mowatt.

But Anthony Musaba stole the Sky Bet Championship points four minutes from the end, netting a close-range attempt.

The Baggies have a chance to return to winning ways this Tuesday when they host Middlesbrough.

Carlos Corberán made one switch, replacing Alex Mowatt with Ousmane Diakite for his maiden start.

The visitors found themselves behind inside nine minutes - the unfortunate Darnell Furlong guiding Marvin Johnson’s cross past Alex Palmer.

Furlong had an opportunity to make amends straight away, yet could only flick John Swift’s cross over, before  Maja saw a shot blocked following Tom Fellows’ pass.

However, against the run of play Wednesday’s advantage was doubled. A long ball caught out Albion’s defence, allowing Josh Windass to nip in and loop one home.

Karlan Grant had a finish saved and Semi Ajayi nodded off-target as Albion tried and failed to half the deficit ahead of half-time.

The boss introduced Mowatt for the second period - later bringing on Mikey Johnston and Grady Diangana as well - and his team scored on 64 minutes. The deadly Fellows and Maja combination linked up once more, the latter converting his seventh 2024/25 goal.

And they found an equaliser, too. Mowatt hitting a volley into the floor, which bounced beyond James Beadle and made it 2-2.

Still, there was to be late drama in South Yorkshire, Wednesday grabbing victory at the death via Musaba’s effort.
