Albion Women head coach Siobhan Hodgetts-Still believes there is plenty for her side to build on despite being beaten by Rugby Borough on Sunday.

The Baggies were downed by early goals in each half at the Valley Stadium in Redditch, ensuring they suffered just their second defeat of the season.

And while the boss was disappointed with the result, she insisted there are positives to take from the FA WNL Northern Premier Division encounter.

“There’s no doubting Rugby's quality and they deserved the win, but I don’t think 5-0 reflects how we performed,” said Hodgetts-Still. “There were definitely phases of the game that we can be proud of and build on.

“Our out-of-possession football for large parts was brilliant and we restricted their opportunities in front of goal. The chances Rugby did have, they were clinical. For a couple of their goals, you sometimes just have to applaud great finishes.

“We spoke about this at the end of the game. Individually and collectively, we know we have to be better in possession. We worked hard to win the ball back but didn’t do enough to retain and use the ball, which was a credit to Rugby’s shape.

“I have to acknowledge our resilience. At no point did the team stop running, pressing, and trying to impact the game. That passion and character of this group is something I’m really proud of.”

Midfielder Kate Evans, who completed the full 90 minutes in Redditch, shared the head coach's views - insisting they "did some good things" even if the scoreline didn't show it.

She said: “We’re disappointed, they’ve capitalised on our mistakes.

"We could’ve prevented a few of their goals, so we’re disappointed with that.

“We did some good things, and we managed to break them down. We put them under some pressure and created opportunities but didn’t finish as well as we can.

“We didn’t defend well enough to keep ourselves in the game.

“We’ve got a really good squad. We’ve got a great group of people and it helps that they get along well.

“There’s a great morale in the squad, it’s important that we learn and move on. We should take the things to improve on into next week at Burnley."
