Carlos Corberán coaching on the training pitches

West Bromwich Albion are back in Sky Bet Championship action on Monday night following a four-week break owing to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Baggies travel north to take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light (ko 8pm), a venue which they haven't played at in over six years.

Carlos Corberán's men will be hoping to pick up from where they left off in mid-November, having secured three straight victories and clean sheets.

Sunderland are back in the second tier following last season's promotion from Sky Bet League One and sit on 30 points from their 21 matches played so far.

Sunderland have made a solid start back to life in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Black Cats spent four years in the third tier of English football following their double relegation from the Premier League in 2016/17 and then the Championship in 2017/18, but made it back to this level courtesy of a play-off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers in May.

This year, they've amassed 30 points from their opening 21 league games, winning eight, drawing six and losing seven.

Former Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is the man in charge on Wearside and was appointed in late August after Alex Neil left to join Stoke City.

Sunderland returned to competitive action last weekend with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Millwall on home soil, their third victory in four games.

Zoltan Gera, Shane Long, Romelu Lukaku (p) and Marc-Antoine Fortune were all on target in a 4-2 victory over the Black Cats.

Former Baggies Craig Gardner and Stephane Sessegnon scored for Sunderland before moving on to The Hawthorns later in their careers.

One for the stattos

The last three meetings at the Stadium of Light have all ended level, producing a total of just two goals.

The Baggies drew 0-0 with Sunderland in Premier League clashes in February 2015 and April 2016, before drawing 1-1 in another top flight encounter in October 2016.

Albion celebrate at the Stadium of Light.

Albion came from behind to earn a fantastic 2-1 win at Sunderland on Monday night.

In their first fixture back from the World Cup break, goals from super substitutes Tom Rogic and Daryl Dike overturned Amad’s opener to send them home with a hard-fought three points.

Carlos Corberán’s team, now victorious in their last four Sky Bet Championship games, return to The Hawthorns this weekend when they host Rotherham United.

Daryl Dike and Tom Rogic celebrate.

The boss made one change from Albion’s last league outing, the 2-0 triumph over Stoke exactly one month earlier, as Eric Pieters replaced Kyle Bartley.

And ahead of kick-off the hosts paid tribute to Baggies Club Doctor Julian Widdowson, whose sad passing was announced on Sunday.

Tom Rogic scores.

Sunderland made the stronger start and found the first goal just before the 20-minute mark, Amad winning a penalty and stepping up to send Alex Palmer the wrong way from 12-yards.

It almost got worse for Albion shortly after, but their ‘keeper was on hand to pull off a brilliant save to deny Alex Pritchard’s close-range volley.

The visitors did create a few opportunities, most notably John Swift firing a free-kick over, yet Sunderland held their one-goal advantage at half-time.

Daryl Dike scores.

The Baggies began the second period well and came close to an equaliser through Matty Phillips – the winger side-footing a finish straight at Anthony Patterson following a quick counter-attack.

Rogic, one of a number of game-changing substitutes introduced by Corberán, forced Sunderland’s No.1 into a good save, too, as the Baggies mainly dominated proceedings.

And it was the Australian who equalised on the 70-minute mark. Dike handed him the ball, and Rogic curled a super effort into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot - his maiden Albion goal.

Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Seven minutes from time they then grabbed the winner they deserved. Jed Wallace, a menace all evening, sent an inviting cross towards the near post, where Dike was on hand to hammer a header home.
