West Bromwich Albion travel to Stoke City on Tuesday night for a first-round clash in the Carabao Cup (ko 7.45pm).

The two teams have come up against each other 151 times before, but the fixture at the bet365 Stadium will, incredibly, be the first in the League Cup.

The Potters kicked the 2023/24 campaign off with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Rotherham United on home soil, while the Baggies suffered a 2-1 reverse at Blackburn Rovers.

The opponents

There's plenty of optimism around Stoke City this season following a number of new arrivals through the door in the summer.

The Potters have added plenty of new faces, including goalkeeper Mark Travers, defenders Ki-Jana Hoever, Luke McNally, Michael Rose and Enda Stevens, midfielders Ben Pearson, Daniel Johnson, Chiquinho and Andre Vidigal, as well as Brazilian forward Wesley.

Stoke made a storming start on Saturday, sweeping Rotherham United aside 4-1 in Staffordshire, a result which only added to the renewed expectation levels among supporters.

The 2023/24 campaign is their sixth successive season in the second tier and, in that time, Tuesday's hosts are yet to finish higher than 14th.

Stoke will have their sights on the play-offs this time around though, and Alex Neil's group will be keen to make it two wins from two games at the start of the campaign when the Baggies visit in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

One to remember

The Baggies secured three important Sky Bet Championship points on the road against Stoke back in November 2019.

Matt Phillips got the ball rolling as early as the eighth minute before Hal Robson-Kanu slotted in a second-half penalty to seal a 2-0 scoreline.

Both clubs have one League Cup title to their name.

Albion won the competition in 1965/66, beating West Ham United 5-3 on aggregate over two legs.

The Potters' moment of glory in the competition came in 1971/72 when they claimed a 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at Wembley in front of almost 100,000 spectators.

Albion were beaten 2-1 by Stoke City in the Carabao Cup First Round on Tuesday evening.

The Potters were ahead at half-time thanks to a Josh Griffiths own-goal, but were pegged back early in the second period through Brandon Thomas-Asante’s flick.

Stoke’s Andre Vidigal was the one to grab the tie’s all-important final goal 25 minutes from time as they edged into Round Two.

Next up, the Baggies return to Sky Bet Championship action this Saturday when they host Swansea City at The Hawthorns.

Carlos Corberán made eight changes and switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the short trip to Staffordshire.

But his team had to withstand heavy Stoke pressure in the opening stages before the hosts took a 27th-minute lead – Griffiths unfortunate seeing Wesley’s shot cannon off the post, onto his back and narrowly over the goal-line.

Albion did cause the occasional scare on the break as the interval approached, the best via Ethan Ingram’s cross which Jovan Malcolm headed over, but they were behind at half-time.

Roared back out by more than 1,300 travelling supporters, the Baggies came close to equalising 10 minutes after the restart – John Swift having a finish cleared off the line and Erik Pieters forcing a great save from Mark Travers with his long-range rebound.

They didn’t have to wait long for that leveller, though, the goal coming via substitute Thomas-Asante, who flicked in Conor Townsend’s cross.

However, Stoke responded and took the lead again almost instantly, former Baggie Dwight Gayle setting up Vidigal to make it 2-1.

Corberán’s men attempted to find another – Kyle Bartley and Ingram both heading decent opportunities over – yet they were unable to force a penalty shootout and Stoke advanced to Round Two.
