Tony Mowbray's Baggies travel down the M5 to take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm).

Albion suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat at home to Sunderland despite dominating proceedings at The Hawthorns on Saturday lunchtime.

The Robins continued their play-off push via a 2-1 victory over Watford over the weekend, with Ross McCrorie and Nahki Wells both getting on the scoresheet.

Mikey Johnston's first-half brace was enough for the Baggies to secure three points in the reverse fixture three days before Christmas.

The hosts

Bristol City have enjoyed a good season and are very much in the play-off picture heading into the final six matches of the 2024/25 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

The Robins, who along with QPR and Preston North End have spent the longest time in the second tier of English football (10 terms), have their sights set on securing a shot at promotion to the Premier League for the very first time.

Tuesday's hosts last graced the top division in 1979/80, but their supporters are hoping this just might be the year that all changes.

Their hard-fought victory over the Hornets over the weekend lifted them into the top six, three points ahead of the Albion.

They'll be hoping to further strengthen their foothold in the play-off spots with a result at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night, while Albion will know a win would see them leapfrog the Robins and regain their place in the top six.

The Baggies soared to a thrilling 3-0 success at Ashton Gate in February 2020 on the way to securing promotion to the Premier League that particular season.

Callum Robinson scored first before Hal Robson-Kanu helped himself to a brace.

The stats

Albion have won six of the last nine Sky Bet Championship meetings with Bristol City, losing one and drawing the other two.

Both teams have scored in just one of the last nine head-to-head matches in all competitions - a 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate in March 2022.

Four of the last five league encounters between Bristol City and the Baggies have ended in 2-0 or 0-2 scorelines, with Albion winning three of those and the Robins claiming victory in one.

The Baggies have won two of their last five trips to Ashton Gate, with those wins coming in 2020 and 2022. Before that, you need to go back to 1998 to find the last time Albion won a league fixture at the home of the Robins.

Albion were beaten 2-1 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday evening.

Following a goalless first-half, the Robins edged ahead through Nahki Wells’ long-range strike.

Tony Mowbray’s men responded courtesy of Alex Mowatt’s tap-in, though City stole victory in added time via Haydon Roberts’ effort.

The head coach made four changes to his XI for the trip south, switching in Josh Griffiths, Mason Holgate, John Swift and Isaac Price.

Albion created the two best chances during a nervy opening half-hour, with Price sending a volley wide and Kyle Bartley seeing a close-range header comfortably saved.

Before half-time, Griffiths was forced into making an outstanding double stop to deny City’s Wells - even if the assistant referee did later put his flag up for offside.

And the Baggies goalkeeper superbly kept out Ross McCrorie, too, ensuring proceedings were level come the interval.

Further opportunities were exchanged straight after the restart - as Griffiths kept out Wells’ finish while Armstrong had a poke held from inside the area.

But City opened the scoring on 56 minutes, Wells finding the bottom corner and handing them the lead.

However, it didn’t last long. Price’s long ball over the top caused a huge defensive mix-up, and Mowatt made no mistake to tap in and level the scoreline.

Momentum immediately swung and the Baggies then almost went in-front, substitutes Tom Fellows and Ousmane Diakite combining for the latter to see his header pushed away.

Daryl Dike - also brought on - almost won the match, agonisingly watching Max O’Leary keep out his late attempt.

Instead, Bristol City stole it - taking advantage of Jayson Molumby’s red card and scoring during stoppage time.

Albion: Griffiths; Furlong, Holgate, Bartley, Styles; Molumby, Mowatt (Diakite 65); Price (Fellows 65), Swift (Bany 65), Grant (Johnston 80); Armstrong (Dike 65).

Substitutes: Wildsmith, Frabotta, Diangana, Lankshear.
