West Bromwich Albion will want to halt a four game winless run when they travel north to take on Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in the Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday night (ko 7.45pm).

The Baggies have lost two and drawn two of their previous four, suffering a last-gasp blow at Oxford United which saw the hosts steal a point in their most recent fixture on Saturday.

Rovers will provide another challenging test and are level on points (18) with Carlos Corberán's men, sharing an identical league record from the opening ten encounters (W5, D3, L2).

The home team won both ties during the 2023/24 campaign - Blackburn claiming a 2-1 triumph on the opening day and Albion responding with a 4-1 success at The Hawthorns in the middle of January.

The hosts

Blackburn Rovers will be delighted with their start to the season having endured a difficult 2023/24 campaign which almost resulted in relegation to Sky Bet League One.

Wednesday's hosts have a perfect record at home, winning five from five, and are sat on a healthy tally of 18 points from ten games - the club's best start to a term in the second tier since 1989/90 when they also had 18 points after ten fixtures.

They recorded a narrow 1-0 triumph in front of their own supporters on Saturday against Swansea City thanks to Tyrhys Dolan's first-half goal, a result which extended their unbeaten league run at home to six.

Former Kidderminster Harriers and Birmingham City boss John Eustace is Rovers' manager and has been since the middle of February 2024 when he replaced Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson.

He guided Blackburn to survival last year and will want to see his side maintain their early momentum deep into the winter and beyond. Eusatce, who turned out for Coventry City, Stoke, Watford and Derby County among others during his playing days, has won nine, drawn 12 and lost eight of his 29 games in the Rovers technical area.

One from the history books

Albion's last win at Ewood Park was a 2-1 triumph in August 2021.

Alex Mowatt scored right at the start of the game and Matty Phillips added a second moments before the break.

Ben Brereton Diaz pulled one back for the home side, but the Baggies saw out the remainder of the contest and took all three Sky Bet Championship points back to the West Midlands.

The stats

Five of the last six matches between Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion at Ewood Park have ended in a 2-1 scoreline. The hosts have won three of those games, with the Baggies earning all three points in the other two. The only fixture not to end 2-1 was a 1-1 draw in July 2020 when the encounter was played without spectators.

In the ten matches between the two clubs since the start of the 2018/19 campaign, nine have seen both teams score with a total of 28 goals flying in. Both teams have scored in all of the last six at Ewood Park.

Albion will be looking for just their third win at Blackburn since the early 90s. The Baggies have returned victorious in just two of their last 14 trips there.

Rovers are the only team in the second tier with a 100 per cent record at home, winning five out five so far at Ewood Park. They've beaten Derby County, Oxford United, Bristol City, QPR and Swansea City.

No team in the Sky Bet Championship have collected more points away from home than Albion's 10 heading into the midweek round of fixtures.

Wednesday's battle is the final game for Carlos Corberán before his two-year anniversary at the Albion. The Spaniard celebrates the milestone on Friday, the day before the club's clash with Cardiff City at The Hawthorns. Corberán heads to Ewood Park with a record of 44 wins, 21 draws and 30 defeats in his 95 matches in charge.

The Sky Bet Championship spoils were shared after a goalless draw between Albion and Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday evening.

Carlos Corberán’s men had their fair share of opportunities but could not break find a way through in Lancashire.

Next up, the Baggies return home to host Cardiff City this Saturday (ko 3pm).

The head coach switched in Paddy McNair and Jayson Molumby for the midweek clash, with the former making his maiden league start.

Both teams saw tame early efforts saved - as Aynsley Pears kept out Tom Fellows and Alex Palmer halted Hayden Carter within the opening 20 minutes.

Blackburn, who had won every Championship home game since the season started, created their best chance midway through the first period when Joe Rankin-Costello smashed narrowly off-target.

And it was that close call which seemed to temporarily kick Albion into gear. The visitors went painfully close twice in quick succession as captain for the evening Darnell Furlong volleyed just wide before Torbjorn Heggem then side-footed inches past the post two minutes later.

Rovers’ Rankin-Costello flashed a shot across goal during first-half stoppage time, too, yet the deadlock remained unbroken come the interval.

Blackburn came out better and threatened early via Cantwell’s close-range free-kick - blocked by the wall - and Ohashi’s dipping strike.

The Baggies held firm and were aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty when Furlong was bundled over inside the area 23 minutes from the end.

Once again a key moment seemed to re-focus Corberán’s side, and they pushed forward in search of a winner soon after.

Karlan Grant’s excellent touch and strike was well parried in-front of the 1,350 travelling supporters - and Jayson Molumby’s drive soon suffered the same fate.

Alex Mowatt attempted one last long-ranger, however he failed to beat Pears and it ended level.
