Albion v Crystal Palace match preview

ALBION play their third game in a week as Crystal Palace visit The Hawthorns on Saturday (ko 3pm).

The opposition

Crystal Palace currently sit bottom of the Premier League table on nine points having won two, drawn three and lost nine of their opening 14 matches.

The London club endured a difficult start to the campaign and failed to pick up a single point or even score a goal in their first four league matches, prompting them to sack then-manager Frank de Boer.

Roy Hodgson was the man assigned with replacing him - and the former Baggies boss has made a steady start to his tenure, including five points from their last three games.

Last time out

The last meeting between the two sides was at the beginning of March when second half goals from Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend handed Palace a 2-0 win at The Hawthorns.

Albion did manage to record a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture back in August 2016, though, thanks to Salomon Rondon’s 74th minute effort.

Stats

Albion

  • Alan Pardew will be taking charge of his first Baggies match on Saturday, coming up against the club he managed between 2015 and 2016.
  • He has overseen 302 Premier League games with four different teams - winning 108 of them - which is coincidentally the same number that Albion have managed.
  • Pardew became the first Premier League boss to guide a side to a top half finish after being in the relegation zone at Christmas when he was at Palace.

Crystal Palace

  • The Eagles are yet to score a goal away from home in a Premier League fixture this season.
  • Roy Hodgson will be returning for the first time since leaving in 2012. The current Palace manager still has the best win percentage (36%) and points-per-match ratio (1.34) of any Albion manager in PL history.
  • There has only ever been one goalless draw at The Hawthorns between the Baggies and Palace - which was way back in August 1970.

From the archive

Gareth McAuley was on target for the Baggies in a 2-0 win over Palace in 2013.

Head to head

The head-to-head record makes for positive reading if you’re an Albion fan.

The Baggies have faced Palace 54 times in total, winning 23, drawing 14 and losing 17.

Man in the middle

Michael Oliver will be the man in charge of Saturday’s game, and he’ll be assisted by Simon Bennett and Stuart Burt - with Lee Mason as the fourth official.

Oliver has taken charge of one Albion match so far this season, the 2-2 draw with Watford back in September.
