Jay Rodriguez is staying quiet on his goals target for the season but admits he’s on track as healthy competition with Dwight Gayle continues to bring the best out of both players.
Gayle netted his 14th of the term in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City - taking him one ahead of Rodriguez.
And J-Rod believes the relationship he shares with his strike partner is part of what makes them the Sky Bet Championship’s most prolific duo.
“You always set a target,” he said. “I set a short-term one and one for the season. I keep it to myself because I think it’s just for me, and hopefully I reach it.
“I think I’m on target at the moment. It might change because hopefully I pass it.
“I’ve got to be realistic, which is what I have done throughout my career. I set myself little targets at the start of the season and I tick them off and try to achieve them.
“Honestly, he’s not stopped,” he joked when asked if he gets any “stick” from Gayle. “No, it’s really good banter between us.
“I love him to bits, as a guy and as a player, he’s a great guy to have. His finishes in training and obviously in games - there’s no luck there - it’s what he’s about.
“I’m happy for him, at the time it was an important goal.
“But he always gives me stick, that’s just Dwight.”
