Hal Robson-Kanu says his team-mates passed their Teeside character test with flying colours as he hit a late winner to earn a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.
The Baggies dug deep to fight miserable conditions in the north east with the former Wales international popping up with eight minutes remaining to send the travelling fans delirious.
And Hal, who signed a contract extension on Friday, admits it’s been a great 24 hours.
“It was fantastic to get the winner, the boys really put in a shift today,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s never easy coming away to places like this, particularly in the Championship. It’s credit to the boys that we did that.
“I’ll take a goal however it comes, they all add to the tally. It’s nice to get exciting goals but it’s great to get important goals and I think that was an important goal today.
“We said before the game that it was a massive opportunity, but also a massive game. We prepared in the weeks building into the game. We’ve obviously had good momentum in the league up until now and I think it was a test of the boys’ character that we came through that.
“It’s now about focusing and maintaining that momentum.
“It’s fantastic to see the fans away from home, the turnout is always incredible. It’s a long journey back so hopefully they’ll be celebrating.”
On signing a contract which secures his services until the summer of 2021, he added: “I’m enjoying my time here, it’s a fantastic club to be at, we’ve got a great group of players, with a lot of young players in the squad.
“You look to impart as much experience as you can and obviously we’ve got a very experienced manager who’s looking to build something. On a personal note, I’m really looking forward to being a part of that.”
