Albion opened 2020 with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United in their top-of-the-table encounter at The Hawthorns.
Semi Ajayi handed the Baggies a dream start with his fourth goal of the season after just two minutes as goaline technology confirmed his flicked effort from Matheus Pereira's corner had crossed the line.
Yet the visitors drew level in the 52nd minute when substitute Patrick Bamford's header bounced off Ajayi's shoulder and beyond Sam Johnstone.
It ensured the spoils were shared in an absorbing New Year's Day encounter in front of the club's biggest home attendance of the season, 25,618, and both sides remained level at the summit of the Sky Bet Championship.
Albion showed four changes from Sunday's defeat to Middlesbrough, only the club's second of the season, with fit-again Kieran Gibbs returning alongside Kyle Bartley, Romaine Sawyers and Filip Krovinović.
And they made the perfect start, Ajayi flicking the ball over the line from Kyle Bartley's header back across goal, despite the best efforts of Jack Harrison's attempted clearance, after the visitors had failed to clear Pereira's corner.
Matt Phillips' sent a clever free-kick into the side-netting before Leeds started to gain a foothold in the encounter, albeit without testing Johnstone.
The Baggies lost Gibbs to injury in the 18th minute, replaced by Conor Townsend, before Sawyers saw loud penalty appeals waved away having been sent to ground by Mateusz Klich.
Pereira tested Kiko Casilla before Helder Costa did likewise at the other end, forcing a save from Johnstone, as an enthralling encounter flowed from end to end.
Casilla was again called into action by Pereira to parry away his curling 30-yard free-kick before Phillips was denied by the United keeper on the stroke of half-time having been sent clean through, Robson-Kanu firing the rebound over the crossbar.
Yet Leeds were level within seven second-half minutes, sub Bamford seeing his header from Harrison's cross bounce off Ajayi's shoulder and past the despairing Johnstone.
Kyle Edwards was introduced just after the hour mark with the visitors dominating proceedings.
Pereira again forced Casilla into a save with an inswinging free-kick in the 69th minute before Phillips fired off target from the edge of the penalty area as Albion applied pressure.
Kenneth Zohore stepped off the bench late on, with Darnell Furlong's flick kept out by Casilla before Johnstone saved from Bamford and Casilla tipped over from Edwards amid a frantic finale as the clash finished all square.
