Albion were held to a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic in a ferocious Sky Bet Championship clash at The Valley.
The Baggies, facing Lee Bowyer’s side for the second time in less than a week, took the lead midway through the first-half thanks to Kenneth Zohore’s strike.
They were quickly pegged back by Josh Davison’s header but were ahead again less than 60 seconds after the interval, Hal Robson-Kanu stabbing home in front of the 3,000 travelling supporters.
Despite having a flurry of opportunities to extend their advantage the third goal didn’t arrive for Albion, and Tom Lockyer’s effort with 15 minutes to go for Athletic ensured the points were shared.
The result returns Albion to the top of the table following Leeds’ defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Slaven Bilić made nine changes to the line-up from last weekend’s FA Cup victory in the capital, with goalscorer Zohore keeping his place alongside Conor Townsend.
His side were put under some early pressure from the home team with Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher twice curling wide from both the left and right corners of the penalty area.
But with 22 minutes on the clock Albion took the lead. Zohore won the ball from defender Lockyer just inside the Charlton half and ran to the box - smashing home at the second attempt after his initial shot was blocked.
Six minutes later Athletic equalised, though, when a corner was flicked into the path of Davison and he made no mistake in tucking it home from close range.
Neither side created anything of note before the break, however the Baggies were again in front within one second-half minute, Robson-Kanu guiding Matt Phillips’ cross into the roof of the net via a deflection to grab his seventh of the season.
Slaven’s men had plenty of chances to net a third, with Darnell Furlong and Robson-Kanu seeing efforts saved and Matheus Pereira and Phillips shooting wide.
Yet it was Charlton who found the next goal - Lockyer getting on the end of a cross to squeeze the ball agonisingly past Sam Johnstone with just 14 minutes left.
Albion piled the pressure on their hosts in the final period of the game but couldn’t find a winner and were forced to share the points.
