Albion were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Trai Hume’s first-half goal grabbed the fourth-placed visitors all three points, ensuring the Baggies suffered a rare home loss.

Next up for Tony Mowbray’s team, they visit Bristol City this Tuesday evening.

The head coach made three changes from last weekend’s Norwich defeat, bringing in Darnell Furlong, Grady Diangana and Mikey Johnston.

His side started brightly, too, and almost opened the scoring when Furlong - back following a three-game suspension - saw a volley cleared off the line.

But the Black Cats grew into the game, initially going close via Romaine Mundle’s dipping effort and then netting 10 minutes before the break. Hume’s free-kick out on the wide left evaded everyone and found the corner, handing Sunderland the advantage.

Albion did try and respond quickly, however Johnston had a shot well blocked, Jayson Molumby nodded a close-range header off-target, and Diangana smashed narrowly over after a good run.

The teams exchanged opportunities at the start of the second period, with Hume firing wide down one end and Adam Armstrong flicking just past the post down the other.

Mowbray’s men were controlling proceedings while only really having attempts blocked from range - so the boss turned to his bench and introduced Tom Fellows, Daryl Dike and Tammer Bany.

Furlong’s side-footer hit a Sunderland wall during a particularly dominant spell, and Anthony Patterson saved a curling Kyle Bartley header as well.

Substitutes Fellows and Dike threatened in the final stages - the latter guiding the former's dangerous cross over - and Joe Wildsmith also stopped Wilson Isidor’s late shot.

Ultimately, though, there were no further goals, leaving Sunderland to take the spoils.
