Albion Women secured their passage into the third round of the Adobe FA Cup with a 3-0 extra-time victory over Needham Market at Ray Hall Lane on Sunday.
Siobhan Hodgetts-Still made four changes to the side that triumphed on penalties against Birmingham City last weekend.
Goalkeeper Lucy Jones dropped to the bench to be replaced by Anna Miller, Isabel Green came in for Ash Brown at right-back, Fran Orthodoxou replaced Kate Evans in midfield and Steph Weston was handed a start in place of Delphi Cole.
The Baggies began the game in forward-thinking fashion, as Phoebe Warner found Simran Jhamat on the cut-back, but the attacker’s shot went high and wide from close range.
It was Jhamat again who would prove to be a threat to the Needham goal as she slalomed into the penalty area only for her top corner-bound shot to be tipped over by goalkeeper Evie McKane.
Olivia Rabjohn would be the next Baggies player to test McKane, her darting run into the penalty area was found by Orthodoxou, but the winger couldn’t beat the goalkeeper as she raced through.
One way traffic continued into the second period as substitute Mariam Mahmood raced forwards after picking up the ball on the break, only for her shot to go agonisingly wide of the post.
Albion kept pushing for more opportunities on goal and another came as normal time began to fizzle out as Mahmood twisted inside the penalty area to create space, but her curled effort was wide of the mark.
Extra-time came and brought with it another wave of Albion chances as Jhamat called goalkeeper McKane into action with a curled shot that looked destined to nestle into the back of the net.
Warner then made a surging run into the six-yard box which was found by Jhamat, but her header from point-blank range was parried away by the Needham shot-stopper.
Albion finally broke the deadlock just before the halfway stage of extra-time, the goal came thanks to Mahmood who curled an audacious lob over the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area.
The floodgates soon opened in the latter stages of the extra period as Jhamat doubled the Baggies’ advantage after being left unmarked in the penalty area to tap home.
The home side’s third came just minutes from the end of the extra period as Mahmood rounded the goalkeeper only to be fouled by the onrushing Needham defender, she subsequently slotted home the spot-kick to secure the Baggies' win.
Albion Women are next in action on Sunday, December 3 against Newcastle United.
