Alex Mowatt says the scoreline proves Albion were worthy winners against Portsmouth in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Baggies produced a stunning display to beat the side from the south coast 5-1 in what was Tony Mowbray’s first game back at The Hawthorns as head coach.

Mowatt’s long-range strike got the ball rolling in terms of goals, with Grady Diangana going on to bag a brace and Jed Wallace and John Swift notching their first efforts of the season.

Mowatt said: “Today’s performance was brilliant and we fully deserved the win.

“It was pretty even in the first 20 minutes or so but I think my goal helped to settle us down and we went on to completely control things.

“We wanted to be exciting and play free-flowing football and get the right players on the ball in the right areas of the pitch where we could hurt Portsmouth.

“We certainly managed to do that and I think the scoreline is evidence of that.

“For my goal, we’ve spoken about the need to take more shots. If you don’t shoot then you don’t score. I got a bit lucky with how it went in but we’ll gladly take it.

“I’m good mates with their manager and he’s been giving me stick about bagging three goals against them this season. We’ve picked up two really good results against them and scored plenty of goals which we’re really happy about.

“We’re trying to take on as much information from the new boss as possible. We know how he wants us to play, so the next few weeks will be all about trying to perfect it as quickly as possible.

“We know we’ve not been scoring as many goals as we all would’ve liked this season and we need to work hard to make sure we’re taking on all the information from the new manager because he’s been open about wanting to play an attractive style with lots of goals.

“We all need to chip in as players all over the park, just like we did today.

“It’s a result which we’ve wanted for a while and hopefully it can give us the confidence to kick on and keep getting victories and scoring plenty of goals.”
