Allardyce reveals inspiration behind derby day triumph

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce inspired his side to Black Country derby victory by showing them highlights of Albion’s last visit to Molineux.

The Baggies have had to wait almost nine years to play Wolves – but a Matheus Pereira double, either side of Semi Ajayi’s header, helped Allardyce’s men earn a memorable 3-2 win.

And the gaffer, who claimed his first triumph with the club, says it was crucial his players understood the importance of the fixture as they made the 11-mile trip to Wolverhampton.

“It’s great to be here at Molineux victorious in the local derby,” he said.

“All the fans that are watching this, I hope we’ve given you a much better weekend than you expected.

“Hopefully, we’ve turned the corner a little bit, and given the fans some pleasure by watching us beat our local rivals in the Black Country derby.

“It’s obviously been the first one in many a year and we showed the players the goals from the 5-1 before we travelled here.

“Today was a thrilling game, a bit nervous towards the end, as it always is when it’s 3-2.

“I’ve seen the real lows with the players and today I’ve seen the highs. We can’t be hugging and kissing, as much as we’d like to, but we can enjoy today.

“A lot of why I’m daft enough to do this job is what I’ve just experienced here. We were excellent.”
