Carlos Corberán | 'The players deserved that result'

Carlos Corberán is interviewed after Albion's win at Stoke

Carlos Corberán praised his players’ commitment in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Stoke City and believes they deserved the result.

The Baggies opened the scoring through Karlan Grant’s back-post header, but the Potters pegged them back when Lewis Koumas equalised shortly after.

Less than three minutes after that leveller, Josh Maja produced a fine finish into the bottom corner to restore Albion’s lead, a lead they wouldn’t surrender in Staffordshire.

The boss says he saw plenty of “personality” on display at bet365 Stadium and was delighted to be able to send the travelling supporters home with three points to celebrate.

Carlos said: “It’s always positive to achieve the result you want to achieve.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the players because they’ve shown a lot of commitment with the game, they have played with personality, they’ve suffered when we had to suffer but, in the end, they have deserved that result.

“We scored our first goal through Karlan Grant and then we had two chances to improve our advantage to two goals when Tom Fellows and John Swift had opportunities.

“It was positive after we missed those big chances and they scored their equaliser, to see that level of reaction from the team. We went on to score our second goal.

“The team had belief and it’s really important to see this mentality in the team. After you have a big chance and the opponent equalises, you have to have a big personality to go on and score the second goal that you need.

“It turned out to be our winning goal and we are really pleased about that.

“I think we played better in the second 45 than in the first half. We started with some big chances in the first half, but, at the same time, we suffered more in defence. We didn’t show our level of solidity in defence like we normally do.

“There was an improvement in our behaviours in the second half and we tried to be more aggressive in the moments when we could be aggressive. We needed to put the line of five in to stop their opportunities and to protect the result.

“It’s excellent to achieve the three points in front of our traveling fans. They gave us amazing support from the first minute until the last. It’s always positive for us to show much we want to dedicate the wins for them.

“They can help us so much, both at home and away. They have a massive influence. We feel their support on the pitch and we always have to work hard to give them three points.”
