Albion captain Jed Wallace said it was crucial his team went into the international period on a high after they beat Bristol City 2-0 at The Hawthorns.
The skipper scored the second goal as Carlos Corberán’s team comfortably dispatched their Sky Bet Championship opponents, making it six unbeaten before the two-week break.
And, in a post-match chat with WBA TV, he explained how “two important goals at two important times” was the key to claiming all three points.
“It was so important we got the win today,” said Jed.
“I thought it was a game that could’ve been a real banana skin. We know Bristol City have the capability to challenge anyone in this league on their day. They’ve beaten Southampton and they’ve pushed Ipswich really close as well.
“It was probably a game everyone expected us to win, but it was the epitome of professionalism from us today. From the first minute the lads were bang on it.
“We scored two important goals at two important times. Tom (Fellows) got the first before the break and then I managed to get the second just after. I think those goals just settled us down and helped us get through the rest of the game.
“It was a tight first-half, they were sat in their shape and it was difficult to break them down.
“Mikey Johnston got down the side a couple of times and got a few shots off, but it was great from Tom to come inside and put it in that bottom corner. It was the perfect time to score.
“The second goal came quickly in the second half and then we saw the game out.
“I think you can see the defensive work we do on the training ground. When we’re ahead, I always feel confident in our ability to defend the box and press when we need to.
“We looked really good in the last half-hour. It’s another positive day and the international break comes at a good time for us after a win.
“For us we need to keep disappointing the teams below. Every time they come in, they need to see that we’ve won again.
“We need to keep them as far away as possible. We just need to concentrate on ourselves, and we know how important this next block of games will be after the break.
“We’ll get a bit of a breather now and then we’ll move onto Millwall.”
