Since suffering their first defeat of the campaign against Southampton back in August, Richard Beale’s men have gone from strength-to-strength in recent performances.
As well as starting their Premier League Cup defence with a solid 4-0 win over Watford, the young Baggies have put together a three-game unbeaten league run, with the standout display coming last time out following a 6-2 derby triumph over Aston Villa.
Left wing-back Shaw has started the U21s’ last three games in all competitions, and as Albion’s youngsters prepare for a return to Premier League 2 action against Boro, the 19-year-old is keen to maintain confidence by keeping that undefeated run going.
“The lads are buzzing, training’s going really well and there’s a really good vibe about,” said Shaw.
“We’re looking forward to playing against Middlesbrough and trying to get another win to keep confidence up around the squad.
“For full-backs, a key area we need to keep working on is one-on-one scenarios. You’re always going to be put in them, and I feel I’ve done well when I’ve been put in them. Of course, there are bits I need to work on but the more I work on it, hopefully the better chance I have of breaking into the first team one day.
“I love to go forward and playing the style we are with five at the back, it suits me linking up with the forward players and I’ll be looking to add goals and assists to my game very soon.
“Those final decisions and end products will either get a goal or assist to my name, and that’s something which will take my game to the next level.
“A lot of the wingers I come up against are smaller than me, so it does help me defensively being taller. I try and use my physical presence to beat them in both attacking and defensive situations.
“When our forward players are in the kind of form they were when we played Villa, I think we can beat anyone and we’ll be looking to do that again on Monday.”
