Mason Holgate admitted having mixed feelings following Albion’s 2-2 draw with Norwich City at The Hawthorns.
The Jamaica international opened the scoring on Saturday afternoon, impressively flicking in at the near post having met a fizzing Karlan Grant delivery from the left.
The Baggies then conceded twice but managed to grab an equaliser when Josh Maja smashed home his tenth Sky Bet Championship goal of the season.
Holgate, on loan from Everton for the 2024/25 campaign, says it was a great personal moment to find the net, but also stressed how disappointed he was to only pick up a point and not all three.
The defender said: “There’s no better feeling in football than scoring goals and I think, to get an early goal, was a positive for us and it set us off in the right direction.
“Ultimately, we didn’t carry on and it was a disappointing result but I think that shows how good we are as a squad that, Norwich are a very good team, and we’re disappointed with drawing against them and it’s something we’re not feeling as positive about.
“Karlan Grant told me that I had to shout him out for my goal. So, KG’s whipped it in and it was one of those things where I ran to it and wasn’t really thinking. Then I looked at the linesman, he’d kept his flag down and then we ran off celebrating.
“I’m going to try and add a few more of them before the end of the season and it’s a good feeling for me personally, but we want three points and at this point in the season, games come so quick and we need to be picking wins up and we know that. It’s something we’re trying to improve on.
“I think we switched off for a 20-minute period in the first half where they scored two, but I feel like we controlled the majority of the game.
“It was harsh to disallow KG’s goal and you don’t see many of them get disallowed in the Championship. I think it was for handball, but it deflected off someone from a yard out, so I think it was very harsh.
“Ultimately, we had control of the game for a longer period of time than them and I think the result’s better for them than it is for us - which shows what direction we want to go in.
“This part of the year, games are coming so fast and this is what defines your year and how it pans out. We know that and we know we need to be winning games and with the squad we’ve got, and the gaffer, we’re more than capable of achieving what we want at the moment.
“We haven’t had that killer instinct, or something a little different of what we need to see games through. You’re not always going to win nice, but a winning team’s a winning team. That’s all we’re lacking at the minute - that little bit to go and put teams to the sword.
“I made no secret about it that I wanted to play football. I’m gutted for Semi and Barts because I get on well with them, but I was ready for my chance and hopefully, I’ve taken it.
“All I can do is keep putting performances in as fast and thick as they come and that’s what I’ve come here for. I want to get involved, to be a part of this club’s success and I feel like we’re going in the right direction to get that.
“We’re just missing a piece, or pieces, for us to turn these draws into wins and when they do turn, you’ll see the best of us because it’s going to come at some point.
“We’ve lost the joint-least amount of games in this division, which obviously shows we aren’t an easy team to take points off and it just feels everyone is disappointed because we drew today.
“It just hasn’t clicked yet and that just shows what kind of quality is in there and when it does click, because the Championship is so tight and if you win three in-a-row, the table can and will look completely different.”
