Albion suffered a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in their penultimate Sky Bet Championship fixture of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Anthony Musaba’s early goal was added to by Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass during the second period, earning the hosts all three points.
The Baggies will now turn their attentions to next weekend’s final day clash against Preston North End.
Carlos Corberán’s team exchanged chances with their hosts during the early stages, Alex Palmer stopping Will Vaulks’s long-ranger before Mikey Johnston forced James Beadle into a good save down the other end.
But it was Wednesday who scored the first, a corner causing chaos and, eventually, Musaba converting from a tight angle in the 23rd minute.
Albion tried to hit back ahead of the interval via Kyle Bartley’s header and Yann M’Vila’s volley, yet neither found the net and it was 1-0 come half-time.
They would have been hoping for a response after the break - however, their task was made harder when Ugbo almost immediately doubled Wednesday’s advantage through a powerful, near-post strike.
Corberán soon rung the changes, quickly making a quadruple substitution, in an effort to get Albion back in the game.
Instead, Sheffield Wednesday grabbed a third, Windass tapping home a rebound and effectively putting the game beyond the Baggies.
The visitors did create a number of openings late on, though were unable to take any of them and left Yorkshire empty handed.
