West Bromwich Albion will be determined to extend their stay at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table by earning a sixth league win this season when they travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday lunchtime (ko 12.30pm).

The Baggies have made a very impressive start to the second-tier term, collecting 16 points from the first 18 on offer - their best return after six fixtures since 1992/93.

They head to Hillsborough hoping to seal a fifth straight victory and a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Hosts Sheffield Wednesday produced an incredible set of results to drag themselves away from the drop last season, but they've had a challenging opening to proceedings in 2024/25.

The Owls are five without a win and suffered a 2-1 reverse at Luton Town last weekend, leaving them sat on four points from six games.

They will be buoyed by their performance against Carlos Corberán's team back in April though, when efforts from Anthony Musaba, Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass helped Wednesday to a dominant 3-0 triumph.

The hosts

Sheffield Wednesday made a storming start to the season by beating Plymouth Argyle 4-0 at home on the opening day, but they head into this weekend's encounter without a win in any of their last five league games.

Saturday's hosts have lost four of those five and were narrowly defeated 2-1 at recently-relegated Luton Town last Saturday, however, they have been winning matches in the Carabao Cup, claiming triumphs at Hull City, Grimsby Town and Blackpool.

The four points Wednesday have earned this term have all been at Hillsborough, heavily defeating Argyle and drawing 1-1 to QPR. Their only defeat in front of their own supporters was a 2-0 setback to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

On home soil, they've only lost two of their last 13 and those defeats were both inflicted by Leeds who secured a duo of 2-0 victories.

35-year-old German Danny Rohl is the boss. He was appointed in October 2023 and completely transformed Wednesday's fortunes after taking over, guiding them to a 20th-placed finish when it looked very likely they'd fall into the third tier.

The former Germany assistant manager is three fixtures off 50 for the Owls, winning 20, losing 20 and drawing the other seven.

One from the history books

Albion claimed a 3-0 victory at Hillsborough when they visited in July 2020 - a result which helped them secure promotion to the Premier League that summer.

Charlie Austin's penalty put the visitors in front at the interval.

Matheus Pereira then bagged a brace after the break to seal all three points.

The stats

Albion have the opportunity to win five straight matches for the first time since a run of five between November and December 2022 this weekend. Carlos Corberán lost his first fixture in charge, but then went on to claim triumphs over Blackpool, QPR, Stoke City, Sunderland and Rotherham United in the next five.

The Baggies have shipped just two goals in six league games this season - keeping three consecutive clean sheets. No side in the whole of the EFL has conceded fewer goals than Carlos Corberán's men.

The visitors will be hunting down a fourth win in-a-row on their travels. The last time Albion secured four straight away wins was back in December 2019 under Slaven Bilic.

All of the last four meetings between Sheffield Wednesday and Albion at Hillsborough have produced at least three goals or more and 14 in total.

Striker Josh Maja has scored in all three of the Baggies' away games in the second tier this season. The last Albion man to score in four successive away league games was Diomansy Kamara back in February 2007.

The Albion colours

Albion will celebrate the gift of life and support the 30th anniversary of Organ Donation Week by donning their pink kit for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Organ Donation Week runs from Monday, September 23 to Sunday, September 29, with the aim of raising awareness of organ donation by asking people to “go pink”.

Almost 60,000 lives have been saved since the NHS Organ Donor Register was created in 1994.

Registering your decision to become an organ donor will help to save even more lives, with 7,600 people currently in need of an organ transplant.

The Baggies kicked off Organ Donation Week by inviting members of the Birmingham Adult Transplant Sport Team to the club’s training ground, with Head Coach Carlos Corberán, skipper Jed Wallace and Managing Director Mark Miles on hand to help promote the campaign.
