Sunderland 0-0 Albion

Alex Mowatt in action.

Albion earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw at high-flying Sunderland in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.

Chances were at a premium at the Stadium of Light, despite a late flurry of action at both ends of the pitch, as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to nine fixtures.

The boss made one change with Kyle Bartley replacing the suspended Darnell Furlong after Ousmane Diakite – initially selected to start – pulled up during the warm-up.

The hosts started brightly in the North East and forced the first save of the game when Alex Palmer parried Wilson Isidor’s deflected effort.

And the Baggies also went close moments later with top-scorer Josh Maja flashing wide from Tom Fellows’ low, right-wing cross.

Albion came under regular fire throughout the remainder of the first half but weathered consistent Black Cats pressure to go in level at the break.

Kyle Bartley in action.

Uros Racic replaced Bartley in Albion’s patchwork defence at the break as Corberan’s men looked to remain resolute in a game short of clear goalscoring opportunities.

Alex Mowatt put his body on the line to keep it all square on 69 minutes - blocking a fierce strike from Chris Rigg inside the area.

The hosts came closer still minutes later when Patrick Roberts shot through the legs of Heggem and inches wide of the left upright.

Tom Fellows in action.

The Baggies almost claimed all three points late on when Lewis Dobbin saw a low left-foot drive cleared from under the crossbar – but the game ended goalless.

A trip to Preston North End awaits the Baggies on Saturday.
