Albion Women midfielder Fran Orthodoxou believes they made a “good start” to their FA WNL Northern Premier Division campaign with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool Feds.
Orthodoxou bagged the opener for the Baggies, ghosting into the penalty area to meet a free-kick with a glancing header that gave the visitors the advantage.
They were made to share the spoils though, as Emma Johnson drilled a low shot into the corner of Anna Miller’s net to even the score late on.
Orthodoxou said: “I'm initially disappointed. To not come away with the three points but comparing it to last season first game of the season we've come away with something."
“It's a lot to build on from here. It's only good for us to start up here with a point to build on for next week.
“We've got quite a few new signings. It's nice for them to come on and make a difference as well.
“We've had a lot of new faces and a little time to kind of connect. It’s really nice to just get everyone in the mix and start building throughout the season.”
The midfielder proved her worth in both penalty boxes last season, netting eight league goals and started her campaign as she means to continue with a goal in the season curtain-raiser.
She said: “I know what kind of deliveries we can put in the box and all I was thinking is that I need to get my head on it. I didn't get on the ball as much as I wanted today just in possession.
“I thought I wanted to give something to the team and thankfully, they found my head and it went in. I’m definitely looking to continue scoring goals and I think it helps the team a lot.”
The Baggies offered plenty in a physical match on Merseyside and will take confidence into their home bow against Halifax next week.
Orthodoxou said: “We expected them to press and really come at us with that physicality. At first, we started to play some good football, and then the momentum switched slightly.
“We’ve come here and got a point. We’ve just got to move on and start building for next week now.
“We've got a few of the fans down here and we do notice that so we’d like to thank them for coming up. We’re definitely excited to get back at Redditch and get three points next week.”
